About Me

 

When I started my PhD in Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia, I thought I knew what I was in for. I had always excelled in academics and I was a solid writer. No problem, I thought. Conducting empirical research was entirely new to me; but I felt ready. Even as I embarked on fieldwork in Guatemala, analyzed my contributors’ interviews, and wrote up my findings, I don’t think I was cognizant of the implications of writing a dissertation. I focused on completing each step and then I worried about the next step, often oblivious to how it would all eventually tie together.

Only after I finished my PhD did I come to understand the transformation that I had really undergone: I left behind my lifelong role as a student and became a scholar. The senior scholars guiding me were pushing me along that path, even though I didn’t recognize it at the time. (Re)Visions provides PhD students with coaching on how to think, write, and act like scholars. These skills include a commitment to academic rigor, analytical skills, self-direction, intellectual curiosity, and an understanding of how to incorporate feedback from others. While one-off editing services have their place (writing and editing are two very different processes!), I seek to give my clients the foundation to embrace their burgeoning identities as scholars.
